Semarang is located in Central Java, Indonesia.
South of Semarang's harbour is Gereja Blenduk, (a Dutch church ) Jalan Letjen Suprapto 32. The name means "domed church". A beautiful Protestant church built in 1753, it is the oldest church in Semarang. It has a baroque organ, a rarity in Indonesia
The Grand Mosque is located on Jalan Kauman with a multi-level Javanese roof. In front of the mosque is the former town square where daily markets are open, the Johar Market. There is a variety of items for sale though mainly textiles and brassware.
Semarang has a long history of Chinese immigrants who settled here so there is no surprise there is a large Chinese quarter including the beautiful Tay Kak Sie Taoist temple on Gang Lombok Street. The main diety within the Tay Kak Sie temple is the Buddhist goddes of mercy, Kuan Yin.
In the south-west corner of Semarang is the Sam Po Kong Temple built in honour of the famous Chinese explorer Admiral Zheng He (or Cheng Ho) who visited this region in the 15th century.
